Emirates Skywards is the free loyalty programme shared by Emirates and flydubai. Members earn two different balances: Skywards Miles, which can be spent on rewards, and Tier Miles, which determine Blue, Silver, Gold or Platinum status. You can earn through flights and partners, then redeem for Emirates, flydubai and partner-airline flights, upgrades, Cash+Miles and selected hotel, retail or lifestyle rewards.
The programme has no single honest “AED value per Mile”. Value changes by route, cabin, date, reward availability, taxes and the redemption chosen. Check the live Emirates Miles Calculator and compare it with the cash price before transferring points or buying Miles. Programme details were verified on 29 July 2026.

Skywards Miles vs Tier Miles
This distinction prevents the most common planning mistake.
- Skywards Miles buy rewards. Earn them on Emirates, flydubai and eligible airline, bank, hotel, car-rental, retail and lifestyle partners. Tier bonuses can increase the Skywards Miles earned on Emirates and flydubai.
- Tier Miles earn status. Emirates says these come from Emirates, flydubai and eligible codeshare flights marketed by Emirates. A partner hotel stay or retail purchase may earn reward Miles but normally does not move you towards Silver or Gold.
Moving up a tier does not increase the number of Tier Miles earned on a flight. Fare brand, route and cabin affect the calculation. Flex and Flex Plus generally earn more than Special or Saver fares; use the calculator for the actual itinerary.
How to earn Emirates Skywards Miles
1. Emirates and flydubai flights
Add the membership number before travel. Earnings depend on route, fare type, cabin and tier bonus—not simply the ticket price or distance. Emirates currently publishes a 30% Skywards Miles bonus for Silver, 75% for Gold and 100% for Platinum on Emirates and flydubai flights.
Do not choose a substantially more expensive fare only for extra Miles without comparing the cash difference. Paying AED 800 more to earn Miles worth less than that saving is not a reward strategy.
2. Airline, hotel, car-rental and lifestyle partners
Emirates lists global partners across travel and everyday spending. Rates, qualifying bookings and posting rules differ. A hotel booking made through an online travel agency may not earn the same as a direct eligible rate, so open the specific partner terms before paying.
3. Skywards Everyday in the UAE
Skywards Everyday links participating UAE retail, dining, grocery, beauty and wellness purchases to the programme through its app. Emirates currently advertises examples such as one Mile per AED 5 at participating grocery, health and other partners. Rates are partner-specific; link the payment card in advance and check that the outlet—not just the brand—is participating.
4. Skywards Miles Mall and financial partners
Skywards Miles Mall awards Miles for eligible online shopping tracked through its portal. UAE bank and card partners may also transfer or award Miles. Compare conversion ratios and transfer times before moving flexible bank points: transfers are usually one-way, and reward availability can disappear before the Miles arrive.
How to spend Skywards Miles
| Redemption | When it can make sense | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Classic Reward flight | You find suitable reward seats, especially where the cash fare is high | Miles, taxes/fees, fare rules and change/cancellation terms |
| Upgrade | Your paid fare is eligible and the premium-cabin price gap is large | Fare eligibility, upgrade availability and whether it is confirmed |
| Cash+Miles | You want an immediate discount or lack enough Miles for a full reward | The displayed saving per Mile against other options |
| flydubai or partner flight | The route or schedule is better than Emirates | Partner award chart, availability, taxes and booking channel |
| Retail/lifestyle reward | Miles are expiring or the reward is genuinely useful | Cash equivalent and whether a flight reward would save more |
Classic Reward flights
Search while logged in, select “Classic Rewards” and compare alternative dates. Emirates can release different availability by flight and date. A seat for sale with cash is not proof that a reward seat exists.
Upgrades
Upgrades can be requested online, at check-in or on board where available. The Miles required depend on route and fare. A cheap restrictive fare may need more Miles or may not offer the same upgrade flexibility as a higher fare. Never assume an airport upgrade will clear when the trip depends on the premium cabin.
Cash+Miles
Cash+Miles is convenient, but convenience is not the same as strong value. Note the cash fare before applying Miles, then record the new cash amount and Miles used. The difference is the saving generated by those Miles.
How much are Emirates Skywards Miles worth?
Use this calculation for the exact option on screen:
Value per Mile = (cash price avoided − extra taxes or fees on the reward) ÷ Miles used
Example: if a ticket costs AED 3,000 cash, while the reward costs 45,000 Miles plus AED 700 in taxes and fees, the Miles avoid AED 2,300. The value is about 5.1 fils per Mile (AED 2,300 ÷ 45,000). This is an illustration, not a published Emirates valuation.
Compare like with like. A non-refundable cash fare should not be compared with a flexible reward as if their conditions are identical. Do not use the full ticket price as “value” while ignoring the cash co-payment.
Emirates Skywards membership tiers
| Tier | Qualification in a 12-month assessment period | Selected published benefit |
|---|---|---|
| Blue | Join free | Entry-level earning and reward access; instant upgrades at check-in/on board where offered |
| Silver | 25,000 Tier Miles or 25 qualifying flights | 30% bonus Skywards Miles; individual Business Class lounge access in Dubai |
| Gold | 50,000 Tier Miles or 50 qualifying flights | 75% bonus Skywards Miles; expanded travel benefits |
| Platinum | 150,000 Tier Miles plus at least one qualifying First or Business Class flight | 100% bonus Skywards Miles and wider First/Business lounge privileges |
Status is assessed as Tier Miles or qualifying flights post. Benefits normally last 12 months from qualification, with the review at the end of the relevant month. Check the account dashboard for the personal review date rather than relying on the calendar year.
Skywards Miles expiry
For most adult members, Skywards Miles are valid for three years from earning and are removed at the end of the birth month in the expiry year. Emirates allows members to pay to extend Miles due to expire within three months for another 12 months, or reinstate Miles that expired within the previous six months, subject to the current terms and fees.
Platinum members have a no-expiry treatment while retaining Platinum, governed by programme rules. Skysurfers are different: since 1 April 2024, Miles in a child’s Skysurfers account do not expire while the member remains a Skysurfer. When the member turns 18, the carried balance expires at the end of the month in which they turn 21.
My Family: how pooling works
A My Family account can pool up to 100% of eligible Skywards Miles earned by family members on flights and most partners. Miles earned through financial conversion partners are excluded from pooling. Tier Miles remain individual.
Contributed Miles cannot be transferred back to the member’s personal balance. If a family member leaves, their contributed Miles stay in the family account. If the Family Head leaves, Emirates says the account closes and the remaining balance is forfeited. Those rules make the choice of Family Head more important than the signup screen suggests.
Children and First Class rewards: the rule the old article misstated
Emirates’ current FAQ says First Class Classic Rewards and reward upgrades from Business to First are available only to passengers aged nine or above. The previous version of this article incorrectly said a child aged nine-plus also needed Silver, Gold or Platinum status. Emirates’ published rule does not add that elite-tier requirement.
Skysurfers aged two to 17 can earn Miles and can be linked to a parent or guardian. Infants can be added to My Family for redemption purposes but do not earn or contribute Miles.
How to claim missing Skywards Miles
- Log in and open Emirates’ Claim missing Miles page.
- Enter the ticket and flight information for the qualifying journey.
- Submit within six months of travel.
- For partner activity, follow that partner’s claim process and retain receipts, booking confirmation and membership details.
Add the Skywards number before future travel and check the statement after the flight. A boarding pass and e-ticket receipt are easier to preserve before a claim is needed than to reconstruct months later.
A practical UAE strategy
- Join before the transaction. Retroactive credit rules vary.
- Use the calculator before choosing a fare. Compare the extra fare cost with the extra Miles and flexibility.
- Search rewards before transferring bank points. A transfer does not reserve a seat.
- Put expiry reminders 12 months out. Last-minute retail spending is better than forfeiture but may not deliver the strongest value.
- Pool deliberately. My Family contributions are not reversible.
- Calculate each redemption. Ignore blanket internet valuations when the live cash saving says otherwise.
Bottom line
Skywards works best when you treat Miles and status as separate tools: earn reward Miles broadly, earn Tier Miles through qualifying flights, search before transferring, and measure redemptions by the cash genuinely avoided. For UAE residents, Skywards Everyday and local financial partners can accelerate earning, but an expiring balance, irreversible family contribution or weak Cash+Miles rate can erase that advantage.
