Updated 29 July 2026: Sharjah’s paid parking hours changed on 1 July. Across the emirate, chargeable hours now run from 8am to midnight — but whether you pay on Fridays and public holidays still depends on the sign beside your space.
The easiest rule to remember is this: yellow-sign zones are normally free on Fridays and official holidays; blue-sign zones charge every day, including those days. Do not rely on the colour of the kerb or what happened on a nearby street. Read the parking sign where you leave the car.

What are Sharjah’s paid parking hours today?
Paid public parking operates from 8am until 12 midnight. The emirate-wide midnight closing time took effect on Wednesday 1 July 2026 and applies in Sharjah City, Kalba, Khorfakkan and Al Dhaid.
Before July, many ordinary paid spaces stopped charging earlier while selected blue-sign zones already ran until midnight. Sharjah Municipality says the change unified the closing time across roughly 124,000 chargeable spaces. What it did not unify is the free-day rule: the sign still determines whether Friday and public-holiday charges apply.
The official announcement says the longer hours are intended to improve turnover and reduce misuse in busy commercial and tourist areas. For drivers, the practical difference is simple: an evening meal or late shopping trip can now fall inside paid hours even in a standard zone.
Yellow sign or blue sign? This decides whether Friday is free
Two spaces can look similar and follow different calendars. Check the information panel beside the parking area before walking away:
- Yellow-sign paid parking: charges apply from 8am to midnight on the regular paid days. Parking normally remains free on Fridays and official public holidays.
- Blue-sign seven-day parking: charges apply from 8am to midnight every day of the week, including Fridays and official public holidays. The sign states that the zone is chargeable on all days.
This distinction is more reliable than asking whether “Sharjah parking is free today”. A public holiday can make a standard zone free while the blue-sign space across the road remains chargeable. If the wording on the sign differs from a general guide, follow the sign.
How to pay Sharjah parking by SMS to 5566
For a UAE private plate, send a message to 5566 using this structure:
plate source [space] plate number [space] number of hours
For example, a Sharjah private plate numbered 5215 for two hours would be:

The municipality’s current service allows sessions of 1, 2, 3 or 5 hours. Wait for the confirmation SMS: that message is the virtual permit. If the request fails or no confirmation arrives, do not assume the car is covered. Check the message format, balance and plate details, then use another payment channel if necessary.
To receive the reply in Arabic, put A at the beginning of the message. Non-private UAE plates and GCC plates require registration with the municipality’s SMS service. For Khorfakkan, the official guide uses an additional KH location code: follow the exact format printed on the local sign or meter.
To extend an active permit by one hour, the municipality instructs users to reply Y to 5566. A reminder should arrive 10 minutes before expiry, but your obligation to renew does not depend on receiving the reminder.

Those totals are the tariffs published on Sharjah Municipality’s current SMS Parking service page. They include the 38-fils telecom transaction charge. An incorrect message may still attract a service charge, so copy the format carefully.
Other ways to pay: meter and Mawqef app
SMS is convenient, but it is not the only option. Drivers can also use the payment machine serving the zone or the municipality’s Mawqef app. The app is useful for saving vehicle details and accessing parking services, but always confirm that the correct vehicle and session appear before leaving the car.
Smart parking lots use their own entry, exit and tariff systems. Do not assume an on-street SMS permit covers a barrier-controlled lot, or that a smart-lot daily rate applies to a roadside space. Read the tariff board for that facility.
Sharjah parking fines drivers are most likely to encounter
Sharjah Municipality publishes a full parking-violations schedule. The most relevant amounts for everyday drivers are:

Staying inside the car does not remove the need to pay when the vehicle occupies a chargeable space. If you believe a municipality parking fine is wrong, Sharjah offers an online parking-fine objection service. Its published terms say the fine date must be no more than 30 days old.
What changed for Sharjah parking subscribers?
Sharjah Municipality confirmed that seasonal subscription fees did not increase when the hours changed. Subscribers instead received two additional hours of daily parking access, extending the covered period from 14 to 16 hours.
A subscription is not permission to use every type of space. The municipality’s terms exclude reserved bays and other restricted parking, and subscription coverage depends on the product purchased. A 30-second check before leaving your car
- Read the nearest sign and confirm whether it is a standard zone or a blue-sign seven-day zone.
- Check that the current time falls within the 8am–midnight paid window.
- If it is Friday or a public holiday, do not assume it is free in a blue-sign zone.
- Enter the correct plate source, number and duration — plus any local code shown on the sign.
- Wait for the SMS, meter or app confirmation before walking away.
- Set your own reminder before the session expires.
The midnight extension is straightforward once the sign colours are understood. The expensive mistakes come from applying the Friday rule to a seven-day zone, copying the wrong SMS format or assuming a payment went through without checking the confirmation.
