Travelling from the UAE to the UK? Check who needs an ETA, the £20 fee, British-citizen exemptions, transit rules, passport validity and eVisa differences.
Flying from Dubai or Abu Dhabi to the UK? A UK ETA concerns travel to the UK, not British citizens visiting the UAE. Your passport nationality, existing UK permission and reason for travel decide the route; your UAE residence visa alone does not. The official ETA application fee is now £20 per person, not the old £10 figure.
GOV.UK guidance checked on 18 October 2026. Start with the official visa/ETA checker before paying. This guide explains common UAE departure scenarios but does not determine an individual’s immigration eligibility.

The first decision: passport, status and purpose
| Traveller leaving the UAE | Starting point |
|---|---|
| UAE citizen making a permitted short visit | UAE nationality appears on the official ETA eligibility list; check for an exemption first |
| British or Irish citizen living in the UAE | No ETA; use the applicable citizenship/travel-document guidance |
| UAE resident with a different nationality | Run the checker for that passport; UAE residence does not make all nationalities ETA-eligible |
| Person with valid UK immigration permission | Check how to prove that existing permission; do not buy an ETA as a substitute |
| Passenger changing flights in the UK | Establish whether the connection passes UK border control, then check the applicable route |
The official nationality list includes UAE, US, Canadian and Australian passports among others. Other nationalities may need a visa instead. Do not use the departure airport or an Emirates ID as the answer to the nationality question. The same Dubai household can contain travellers on different UK entry routes.

British and Irish citizens: do not apply for the wrong permission
GOV.UK’s exemption guidance says British and Irish citizens do not need an ETA. Dual citizens with British or Irish citizenship cannot obtain one. The page describes evidence including a valid British or Irish passport, or another valid passport with the relevant certificate of entitlement. It also points to specific dual-citizen guidance for other circumstances.
Do not try to solve a missing British travel document by applying as an ETA visitor on another passport. Check the official dual-citizen instructions well before the flight. Existing UK visas, permission to live, work or study, and other listed exemptions also need their own checks. An exemption from ETA does not mean an airline needs no evidence of the right to travel.

The fee: count eligible people, not households
The official overview lists £20 for an ETA and warns that other websites may charge more. Each eligible traveller needs their own authorisation, including babies and children. There is no single family ETA.
For example, two eligible adults and two eligible children need four applications: 4 × £20 = £80 in government application fees. If one adult is British, one is an ETA-eligible UAE citizen and both children are British, that scenario needs only one ETA application: £20. These are illustrative citizenship combinations, not a determination of a particular child’s nationality.
The amount your card charges in dirhams depends on its exchange rate and any payment fees. We are not presenting a fixed AED conversion as the government price. A paid intermediary is not an official requirement, and the government says another website or app cannot obtain a faster decision.

Apply through the official route
Use GOV.UK’s application page and its official app links. Have the passport you will travel with, an email address and a supported payment method ready. The process requires photographs or scans of the passport and applicant’s face; follow the actual prompts and photo rules.
- Check the passport number and identity details against the document itself.
- If applying for another person using the app, they must be with you; if they are absent, use the online route.
- Submit a separate application for each eligible person and keep each reference associated with the correct passport.
- Wait for the email confirming approval before travelling—not merely a payment receipt.
GOV.UK says decisions usually arrive within a day but can take up to three working days. People applying together can receive decisions at different times. Applying for everyone in one session does not guarantee simultaneous approval. The fee is non-refundable after application; rejected applications or corrected details may require a new application.
Pending, rejected or refused: read the actual decision
The Home Office’s ETA factsheet distinguishes rejection from refusal. These are not interchangeable labels for a delay. For a UAE household waiting on several applications, use the outcome for each person rather than assuming everyone should simply pay again:
| What you have received | Next step |
|---|---|
| Submission or payment confirmation, but no decision | Wait for the approval email before travelling. After three working days without a decision, check spam or junk, then use the official UKVI contact route. |
| ETA approved | Check the passport linked to it. Approval is permission to travel, not guaranteed admission. |
| Application rejected | Read the reason and address it before applying again. A new application is a separate paid application. |
| ETA refused | The Home Office says there is no ETA appeal; apply for the appropriate visa if you still wish to seek permission to travel. Do not treat refusal as a routine photo correction. |
The separate Check your ETA service can show whether you hold an ETA and when it expires, using the passport you applied with. It explicitly cannot be used for a recent application that has not yet been granted. A pending family member therefore needs the decision/contact route, not repeated attempts to use the existing-ETA checker. These public instructions were checked on 28 October 2026; no personal application or immigration decision was tested.
Validity is not the length of one visit
An ETA normally lasts two years or until the passport used in the application expires, whichever happens first. It is linked to that passport. A new passport means checking and obtaining the required authorisation for that new document rather than assuming the old passport’s ETA transfers.
The permitted-activities guidance allows visits of up to six months for tourism, family and friends, qualifying business trips and short-term study. It separately describes the Creative Worker concession and permitted paid engagements. These are defined routes, not a general right to take any job.
An ETA does not permit ordinary paid or unpaid UK employment or self-employment outside the specified exceptions, claiming public funds, living in the UK through repeated visits, or marrying/giving marriage notice without the appropriate route. It also does not guarantee admission. Check the visa checker if your actual purpose is different; do not stretch a visitor label to cover it.
Passport expiry: do not add a fictitious six-month UK rule
For the relevant overseas visitors, UK border guidance says the passport must be valid for the whole stay. That is not a blanket requirement for six months of validity after departure from the UK. Any transit country’s requirements are a separate check.
Compare the passport you will carry with the one used for your authorisation and airline booking. A spelling, expiry or passport change discovered at check-in leaves less time to resolve the problem. Keep authorisation records securely; do not post passport images or approval references publicly when asking for help.
Changing flights: airside and landside are different
The UK transit guide distinguishes airside connections, without passing border control, from landside connections, where you do pass it. Current ETA exemption guidance excludes airside transit from ETA requirements. This does not mean every nationality is exempt from every transit-visa rule.
Ask the airline whether your actual itinerary requires border control—for example because of the airport, terminal arrangement, baggage collection or separate tickets. Do not decide from the layover’s length alone. For a landside connection, check whether your nationality and permission require an ETA, a visa or an exemption. Keep the carrier’s answer with the itinerary and rerun the check if the connection changes.
ETA and eVisa are not interchangeable
An eVisa is a digital record of existing immigration status and its conditions; an ETA is a travel authorisation for eligible visitors. If you already have UK status, use the eVisa/UKVI-account route to access and maintain it. Buying an ETA does not fix an inaccessible status record or recreate settlement.
The current border guidance says BRPs have expired and cannot be used for travel. Check that your eVisa is linked to your current passport, your account details are accurate and you can access the appropriate proof. Someone with old settlement evidence should follow the official eVisa/settlement guidance or seek case-specific help, rather than assume all old-document situations have the same solution.
A mixed-nationality family’s preflight check
- Create one private row per traveller: nationality, passport expiry, UK status and intended activity.
- Mark the required route for each person using the official checker. Do not copy the parent’s answer to every child.
- For each ETA applicant, record application versus approved status separately; do not treat payment as approval.
- For existing status holders, check the current passport link and proof of permission.
- Check transit requirements for the actual itinerary as well as the UK destination.
- Before departure, reconcile that list against the passports actually packed.
That final passport-by-passport reconciliation is more useful than a generic instruction that “UAE residents need an ETA”. If any row is unresolved, use official guidance or qualified immigration help before relying on it. The goal is the right evidence for each person, not the largest number of paid applications.
Questions answered
Do British citizens in Dubai need a UK ETA?
No. British and Irish citizens are exempt; dual citizens with either citizenship cannot obtain an ETA. Follow the official travel-document guidance.
How much does a UK ETA cost?
The official application fee is £20 per eligible person, including children and babies. A dirham card total depends on the payment provider’s conversion and fees.
Does UAE residence make me eligible for a UK ETA?
No. Eligibility depends on passport nationality, UK immigration status and travel purpose. Use the GOV.UK visa/ETA checker for each traveller.
Is a UK ETA the same as an eVisa?
No. An ETA is travel authorisation for an eligible visitor; an eVisa records immigration status and its conditions. Existing status holders should check their UKVI account and current passport link.
