A nine-day school break and a nine-day workers’ holiday are not the same thing. I’d put the child’s school calendar beside the parent’s work notice before counting travel days. The useful calculation is the workdays requiring permission, not the longest break in a headline. I’d check the actual curriculum, school notice and employer arrangement. The Ministry of Education’s 23 July 2025 calendar announcement set the mid-term dates. The nine-day total is inclusive calendar arithmetic: 25–31 May is seven days, and the preceding 23–24 May weekend adds two. That calculation does not extend an employer’s holiday entitlement or establish every staff member’s attendance obligations.
What applied to private schools?
Start with the curriculum and the individual school’s approved calendar, not a nationwide headline. MoE’s mid-term provision specifically identifies public schools and private schools following the government curriculum. The KHDA-published calendar for Ambassador School, for example, lists Eid Al Adha on 26–29 May; it is an individual-school record, not proof of every Dubai school’s closure pattern.
For a family, the useful question is whether the child’s actual calendar matched a parent’s work schedule. Keep the school notice and employer notice side by side. Do not infer that teachers, administrative staff, pupils in different curricula and private-sector parents all received the same time away.
What about private-sector employees?
WAM reported MoHRE’s announcement on 18 May 2026, specifying 26–29 May as the paid private-sector holiday dates. This is a separate source and decision from the school calendar. For an individual shift or work-on-holiday arrangement, check the employer’s notice and applicable employment rules; the number of dates in an announcement is not a personalised rota.
Federal employees: a different Monday rule
The Federal Authority for Government Human Resources announced 25–29 May for ministries and federal entities, with work resuming on 1 June. For a Saturday–Sunday schedule, that joined 23–31 May into nine calendar days without using the extra Monday leave in the private-sector example. This was a federal-government announcement, not a rule for every employer.
My practical check is Monday 25 May: was it granted by the notice covering the job, or did it require approved leave? That single distinction changes a family’s nine-day plan. I would not copy a federal colleague’s dates into a private-sector leave request.
How a six-day or nine-day personal window was calculated
For a worker whose usual weekend was Saturday and Sunday, 26–29 May plus 30–31 May created a six-day calendar window. If the employer also approved leave on Monday 25 May, the preceding weekend of 23–24 May could connect it into nine days. That Monday was an added leave day in this example, not an extra date granted by the four-day private-sector announcement.
This distinction matters when budgeting leave: a school might be closed while a parent was still working. Count the actual workdays requiring permission before treating a long-break headline as a travel plan.
Planning beyond this archived holiday
The original story also treated an early-May airport recovery announcement as proof of full flight availability. That was too broad: an old operational update does not establish a particular flight’s current status or price. For a future trip, verify the new holiday announcement, approved leave, school dates and the booked service separately.
