Step outside in August and it’s 45 degrees. Step inside the Mall of the Emirates and Ski Dubai keeps its five slopes between -1 and 2 degrees, year-round, regardless of the season outside the glass. That kind of contrast is basically Al Barsha’s personality: one of Dubai’s most useful, unglamorous, genuinely central bases, anchored by a mall that includes an actual mountain.
Handily placed off Sheikh Zayed Road, Al Barsha puts much of the city within easy reach. Here’s how to make the most of it, as part of our main Dubai guide.
The mountain inside the mall
Ski Dubai opened in November 2005 as the Middle East’s first indoor ski resort, and its 85-metre indoor mountain still holds the world’s first indoor black diamond run, alongside a 400-metre main slope and a separate snow park for sledding and tobogganing. Ski Dubai opened on 1 November 2005 as the Middle East’s first indoor ski resort, and at 22,500 square metres of real snow it’s still one of the largest anywhere in the world. The main slope climbs 85 metres — about a 25-storey building — across five runs up to 400 metres long, kept at a steady -1°C to 2°C year-round, with a separate 3,000-square-metre Snow Park for sledding, an ice cave and the resident penguins most visitors come specifically to see.
How it fits together
The Mall of the Emirates is the district’s landmark, with the surrounding streets packed with cafes, hotels and shops; Dubai Hills and the Marina are both a short drive away.
Mall of the Emirates opened on 28 September 2005, developed by Majid Al Futtaim at interchange four on Sheikh Zayed Road, and now runs to more than 630 stores across 255,000-plus square metres, with over 100 restaurants and 7,900 parking spaces. It’s currently partway through a reported AED 5 billion expansion adding roughly 100 more stores and a new theatre, so expect visible construction in parts of the mall through 2026 — annoying short-term, better long-term.

Where to stay near the mall
Novotel Dubai Al Barsha covers the mid-range end well — 465 rooms across 41 floors, including close to 90 suites and more than 100 interconnecting family rooms, directly across from the Insurance Market Metro station and a daily shuttle to JBR and Kite beaches. Sheraton Mall of the Emirates sits a short walk from the mall itself for a slightly more polished stay, while Ibis Al Barsha covers the budget end of the same strip. Between the three, Al Barsha has one of the deepest supplies of well-priced, centrally located hotel rooms anywhere in Dubai.
Metro on one side, the highway on the other
The Metro’s Mall of the Emirates and Sharaf DG stations serve the district, and the area around the mall is walkable.
When to go, and how to get there
Our tip: book Ski Dubai’s first slot of the day if you actually want to ski rather than queue — the snow gets choppier and the lift lines longer as the day goes on, and weekends specifically get overwhelmed by families there for the penguins and the toboggan runs rather than the slopes themselves.

Which part of Al Barsha to know
Al Barsha isn’t one block — it splits into a few distinct pockets. Al Barsha 1, closest to the mall and Sheikh Zayed Road, is the most polished stretch, with newer apartment towers and a dense café scene. Al Barsha 2 and 3 run more villa-heavy and residential, while Al Barsha South, further out, has become a go-to for newer, better-value apartment stock.
For a break from the mall, Al Barsha Pond Park is worth knowing about — a walking track and pond loop that fills up with joggers once the evening heat breaks, and one of the few proper green spaces in this stretch of the city.
