I would put a leave request beside the calendar before putting a flight in the basket. The remaining National Day planning dates are Wednesday 2 and Thursday 3 December 2026 under the standing UAE holiday list. A five-day escape is possible for a Saturday–Sunday weekend worker if Friday 4 December is approved annual leave. It is not an announced five-day public holiday.

This guide separates dates already announced earlier in 2026 from what still needs a year-end sector circular. The distinction matters: the federal Eid al-Adha break began a day earlier than the private-sector break, and the holiday taken for the Prophet’s Birthday was 28 August. Neither belongs in a table of guesses now.

UAE public holidays 2026: the dates and the qualification

Rechecked 20 October 2026. Earlier holidays are shown as history, not upcoming booking alerts. The December row gives the standing dates, not a claim that a final 2026 transfer decision has been issued. Follow the notice covering your actual employer.

Occasion 2026 date or holiday window What to know
New Year’s Day Thursday 1 January One day on the standing national holiday list; now past
Eid al-Fitr Thursday 19–Sunday 22 March Private-sector 22 March extension followed the confirmed completion of 30 days of Ramadan
Arafat Day and Eid al-Adha Private sector: Tuesday 26–Friday 29 May; federal entities: Monday 25–Friday 29 May Separate announcements; do not give every worker the longer federal window
Hijri New Year holiday Monday 15 June Announced for federal government and private sector
Prophet Muhammad’s Birthday holiday Friday 28 August Observed holiday date, not the earlier lunar-date forecasts
National Day / Eid Al Etihad Wednesday 2–Thursday 3 December Standing two-day allocation; final 2026 sector arrangements need checking
Public holidays, annual leave and ordinary weekend days are different things. Local-government, school and shift-work arrangements need their own checks.

The December break I would actually plan

My first choice would be the simple version: request Friday 4 December, wait for approval and keep any booking changeable until the relevant notice is clear. I would not spend money on the strength of a “long weekend confirmed” headline that has quietly counted a working Friday as a day off.

Date Day Planning assumption for a Saturday–Sunday weekend worker
2 December Wednesday Standing National Day holiday
3 December Thursday Standing National Day holiday
4 December Friday Approved annual leave required if normally a working day
5 December Saturday Ordinary weekend
6 December Sunday Ordinary weekend

The calculation is 2 + 1 + 2 = 5 consecutive days. Only two are the listed public holidays. It is a conditional planning example, not a fresh government announcement or a promise that every employer must grant Friday leave.

Want longer? Count the leave before calling it a bargain

For the same weekend pattern, approved leave on Monday 30 November, Tuesday 1 December and Friday 4 December would connect Saturday 28 November through Sunday 6 December: nine consecutive days using three leave days, assuming the standing December dates apply. I would choose this only if three days of leave and the actual trip cost make sense together.

That example does not turn Commemoration Day into paid leave. Nor does it establish a right to a particular annual-leave accounting method. Confirm how your employer books the absence and which roster applies. If the Cabinet transfers the holiday or your employer announces different arrangements, redo the calendar before paying.

New Year’s Day: Thursday 1 January, not a blanket shutdown

New Year’s Day is the fixed 1 January entry in the UAE government’s public-holiday list. In 2026 it fell on Thursday. I would keep that fact separate from New Year’s Eve celebrations or an employer’s remote-working arrangements: they are not interchangeable permissions.

A holiday also does not prove that every café, attraction, business or transport service closes. The useful question is what your chosen operator actually announced. For future celebrations, use the event’s dated programme and ticket conditions rather than assume a previous year’s fireworks, brunch or opening hours will repeat.

Eid al-Fitr: why the March holiday began before Eid itself

MoHRE’s announcement carried by WAM on 23 February set a private-sector break of 19–21 March, with 22 March added if Ramadan lasted 30 days. The Presidential Court’s subsequent announcement confirmed Thursday 19 March completed Ramadan and Friday 20 March was the first day of Eid. That satisfied the extension condition.

The resulting 19–22 March window should not be confused with the first day of Eid on 20 March. It is a useful example of why a religious date, a holiday window and an astronomy forecast need separate labels. I would retain the actual announcement when checking a past leave record, rather than use an old “expected Eid dates” article.

For anyone comparing a future year, the lesson is simple: do not carry this four-day Gregorian window forward by assumption. The dates and the applicable circular must be checked again. This is a 2026 record, not a verified 2027 calendar.

Arafat Day and Eid al-Adha: the sector difference that matters

The private-sector notice carried by WAM set 26–29 May 2026 as paid holiday for Arafat Day and Eid al-Adha. FAHR’s federal-government announcement instead set 25–29 May, with official work resuming Monday 1 June.

I would not collapse those into one “everyone gets five days” statement. A private-sector worker and a federal employee were not starting from the same announced window. Local-government employees also need their own authority’s circular, rather than an assumption based on the word “public”.

The longer stretch of days away depends on the weekend or shift pattern around the holiday. A worker rostered on Saturday cannot automatically add that day merely because a conventional office-week example does. That distinction is more useful than a dramatic holiday total with the assumptions hidden.

Hijri New Year: the holiday was Monday 15 June

Aletihad’s 3 June report of the FAHR and MoHRE announcement records Monday 15 June 2026 for federal entities and private-sector establishments. The old 16-or-17 June forecast is not the holiday taken.

For someone with Saturday and Sunday off, that Monday joined the weekend without a bridging leave day. For another roster, the result was different. I would use the announced holiday date for time-off planning, not a lunar-date conversion copied into a general calendar.

Prophet Muhammad’s Birthday: Friday 28 August

FAHR Circular 11 of 2026, issued 7 August, specifies Friday 28 August for ministries and federal entities. ARN’s report reproduces the UAE Media Office announcement covering the federal government and private sector on the same day.

This replaces the page’s incorrect “24 August confirmed” row and the conflicting 25-or-26 August forecast. The date of a religious occasion and the day granted as leave can differ. I would use the actual employment-holiday announcement rather than assume a school calendar or religious-date listing answers the work question.

Commemoration Day is 30 November—not an automatic extra day off

The Ministry of Health and Prevention’s occasion page gives 30 November as Commemoration Day’s official date. It honours the UAE’s fallen heroes. The former statement that 1 December is its fixed public holiday was wrong.

Commemoration Day is not a separate entry in the current standing national paid-holiday list. I would not add either 30 November or 1 December as a guaranteed day off. A separate decision or employer-granted benefit needs its own evidence. In the nine-day planning example above, both dates are deliberately counted as annual leave, not free extra holidays.

Can holidays move? Two different rules, not one shortcut

Cabinet Resolution 27 of 2024 gives the Cabinet a power to transfer non-Eid holidays to the beginning or end of the week by resolution. That does not mean every midweek holiday is automatically moved. Its separate overlap rule says a holiday is not transferred when it coincides with another public holiday or falls on the weekend.

I would therefore look for a decision, not manufacture a substitute weekday. The resolution also allows local governments additional holidays for their own departments and corporations; that is not a general promise of the same extra day for every private employer. Working on a holiday raises a separate employment-entitlement question—ask the applicable authority about your circumstances rather than treat this calendar as a legal determination.

My booking checklist: five answers before a non-refundable payment

  • Which notice covers me? Federal, local-government, private-sector and school arrangements are not interchangeable.
  • Which days are actually mine? Mark public holidays, normal rest days and requested leave in different colours. Use the real roster, not a generic weekend.
  • Is the leave approved? Keep the employer’s confirmation beside the itinerary. A holiday prediction is not leave approval.
  • What can I change? Read the actual flight and hotel amendment, cancellation, no-show and check-in conditions before treating a refundable headline as protection for the whole trip.
  • Is the outing actually operating? Check the venue’s dated opening times and booking terms. For ideas, our UAE hotels with private pools guide is a starting point, not a holiday-price or availability guarantee.

For a family, I would put the school’s calendar beside both parents’ rosters. A public holiday is not the whole school break, and a staff-training date is not necessarily a pupil’s day in class. If those calendars do not align, the headline length of the break is not your usable trip length.

For an employer or hospitality team, I would plan cover against the actual circular and employee roster, then publish customer-facing hours separately. “Public holiday” is not a useful substitute for telling someone whether the service they need will open. Do not promise a blanket shutdown or a universal extended opening.

My verdict: book the days you can account for

A good holiday planner should save you a booking mistake, not sell you an imaginary extra day. My December recommendation is the one-leave-day, five-consecutive-day option for readers whose Saturday–Sunday weekend and approved Friday leave genuinely fit it. The longer nine-day version costs three leave days. Count honestly, check the notice and spend on the break you can actually take.

Frequently asked questions

What are the confirmed UAE public holidays in 2026?

The calendar below distinguishes past announced holidays from the remaining National Day planning dates. The holiday taken for the Prophet’s Birthday was Friday 28 August, not 24 August. For December, the standing national list specifies 2 and 3 December; check the eventual 2026 sector circular before relying on a transferred or extended break.

When was the Eid al-Fitr holiday in 2026?

The private-sector announcement set 19–21 March, extending to 22 March if Ramadan completed 30 days. The Presidential Court subsequently confirmed that Thursday 19 March completed Ramadan and Friday 20 March began Eid. Read together, those announcements establish a 19–22 March holiday, not an unconfirmed future forecast.

Will UAE holidays be moved if they fall on weekends?

Do not assume a substitute weekday. Article 3 of Cabinet Resolution 27 of 2024 says a public holiday is not transferred when it coincides with another public holiday or falls on the weekend. The separate Article 2 power allows the Cabinet, by resolution, to move non-Eid holidays to the beginning or end of the week.

Can I get a five-day National Day break in December 2026?

On the standing 2–3 December dates, someone whose weekend is Saturday and Sunday could combine those two holidays with approved annual leave on Friday 4 December for five consecutive days, 2–6 December. That is two holidays, one leave day and two weekend days, not an announced five-day paid public holiday. A different roster or later circular changes the calculation.

Sources and review scope

Rechecked 20 October 2026 against the linked sector announcements, FAHR’s actual one-page August circular, WAM’s private-sector notices and the reports identified above. The standing holiday list and transfer provisions were checked in official indexed text; direct rendering of the government portal and legislation PDF was limited. No final 2026 National Day transfer circular was established in this review. All six existing images were visually inspected and retained as illustration. Leave arithmetic is our stated planning calculation, not an employer approval or an individual legal assessment. Original authorship and publication date remain unchanged.
