The steel Breitling DB5 tribute is the version I’d start with. It delivers the collection’s automotive design idea and shared core chronograph functions without the precious-material jump. The platinum-bezel and red-gold editions are different purchases, not simply extra colours. Compare the exact reference and construction first; the dated UAE price table below makes the scale of each step clear.
My watch verdict: steel makes the clearest design-led case
If the DB5 connection and Top Time styling are what you love, the steel model has the straightforward argument. Choose the other editions because you specifically want their materials and dial treatment, not because the smaller run must be the better watch. I’d try the actual 41mm case and request a written quote. “Contact Us” is an enquiry status, not a reliable sell-out or boutique-stock report.
For other chronograph approaches, compare Omega Speedmaster 38mm and IWC Arabic-dial Portugieser; case diameter alone does not settle fit or ownership needs.

The three AED prices were rechecked on the actual Breitling UAE product pages on 21 October 2026 and remain unchanged from the 11 October check. All three pages show “Contact Us”. That is an enquiry status, not proof of a sell-out or confirmation that a boutique has an example available.

Those prices include VAT on Breitling’s UAE product pages. “Contact Breitling” does not prove that a reference is sold out; it means the site was not offering a direct online checkout for that model when we checked. Confirm live stock with the brand rather than relying on a resale listing or an assumed UAE allocation.

These differences use the VAT-inclusive UAE list prices above, not resale values or negotiated quotes. I would not pay the premium just because a smaller edition sounds more exclusive. The question is whether I want those actual materials enough to pay the difference.
What all three editions share
Every version uses a 41mm Top Time case, sapphire crystal, a brown hand-coloured gradient calfskin strap and 100-metre water resistance. The three current Breitling UAE pages list 13.3mm thickness; I would use that manufacturer specification rather than the 13.8mm in some launch coverage. Inside is the self-winding Breitling Manufacture Calibre 01, a COSC-certified column-wheel chronograph with a vertical clutch and an approximately 70-hour power reserve.
The movement is visible through the sapphire caseback. Its rotor carries dedicated Aston Martin engraving: rhodium-plated on the steel version and 18k red gold on the steel-and-platinum and red-gold references. All three provide central chronograph seconds and a 30-minute counter, with a tachymeter scale around the dial.

The three DB5 editions explained
Steel and silver: AB0178121G1X1
The entry reference pairs a stainless-steel case with a silver sunray dial and black, concentrically textured subdials. Its warm wooden inner ring and brown strap carry the DB5 connection without turning the watch into a logo-heavy car tie-in. The caseback is marked “One of 1022”, so pieces belong to the limited run but are not individually numbered in sequence.
At AED 43,660, it is AED 24,355 below the steel-and-platinum model. It also has the largest production run, although 1,022 pieces worldwide still makes it a limited release.
Steel, platinum and black lacquer: PB0178121B1X1
The middle edition retains a steel case but adds a platinum bezel and a high-gloss black lacquered dial. It is limited to 315 pieces and uses an 18k red-gold rotor rather than the steel model’s rhodium-plated component. Its AED 68,015 UAE price is 55.8% above the all-steel reference.
This is my quieter-looking material upgrade of the trio. The black lacquer, steel case and platinum bezel give it a more restrained appearance than full red gold. That is a visual preference, not a claim that we weighed the watches or found one more comfortable.
Red gold and natural onyx: RB0178131B1X1
The flagship reference uses an 18k red-gold case, buckle and rotor with a dial cut from natural black onyx. Breitling says it is the brand’s first use of the stone. Unlike the other two casebacks, each of the 250 examples is individually numbered.
The UAE price is AED 173,325—almost four times the price of the steel watch. That premium is not simply for scarcity: the case, folding clasp, rotor and stone dial are different. Natural onyx can also show subtle variation, so product photography cannot guarantee that every dial will look identical.
How the Aston Martin DB5 appears in the design
The DB5 references are concentrated in texture and proportion. A wooden inner ring recalls the car’s steering wheel; the “squircle” chronograph counters echo period dashboard gauges; and the hand-coloured brown strap is intended to resemble the depth of classic automotive upholstery. Grooved case corners and mushroom pushers retain the 1960s Top Time language.
The collaboration has a real historical link. The Aston Martin DB5 was introduced in 1963. Two years later, Sean Connery wore a modified Breitling Top Time ref. 2002 alongside the DB5 in Thunderball. The watch was the first Q-modified timepiece in the James Bond film series, according to Aston Martin’s official launch announcement.

Breitling’s current UAE product pages identify three boutiques for this collection:

Which edition makes the most sense?
Our buying view: the steel model makes the clearest case if the DB5 design matters more to you than precious materials. The movement and core functions are shared, while the more expensive editions change the bezel, case, rotor or dial. That is a concrete reason to compare them. We would not treat the highest price or smallest edition as automatically the best choice, and we have not independently worn these three watches to establish comparative comfort.
The steel AB0178121G1X1 is the straightforward choice if the design and DB5 story matter more than rare case materials. It delivers the same Calibre 01, water resistance, case size, strap concept and dashboard details for the lowest price.
The PB0178121B1X1 is for buyers who specifically value platinum, a black lacquered dial and the tighter 315-piece run. The RB0178131B1X1 is a different proposition: natural onyx and extensive red gold make it the material-led collector piece, not merely the most limited colour.
None should be bought on scarcity language alone. Try the 41mm case, confirm the live UAE price and warranty terms, and ask the boutique to identify the exact reference on the order. My boutique checklist before committing
Ask to see the exact reference on the quote, try its case and folding clasp, and inspect the dial under more than one light. The wrist photograph makes the steel version’s silver dial and dark counters easy to read visually; it does not establish the fit on your wrist. With the onyx version, inspect the actual example rather than expecting a product image to settle every detail.
I would also ask the boutique to explain the warranty extension terms and the care instructions for the calfskin strap. A 100-metre case rating is not a reason to assume the leather should share every activity. Get the reference, live price, delivery position and warranty terms in writing; “Contact Us” does not answer those questions.
