Abu Dhabi introduces SMART Bins.
Abu Dhabi is taking a significant step towards advanced waste management with the introduction of smart bins. These high-tech bins, developed by Tadweer Group, are currently under trial and promise to revolutionise how waste is collected and managed in the city. Abu Dhabi introduces SMART Bins designed for the future of waste management.
How Smart Bins Work
The smart bins have sensors and advanced technology to detect and analyse the type and amount of waste deposited. Residents are required to register on an official portal, providing basic details such as their name and address. They can then use a barcode or QR code scanner on the bin to open it and drop their waste. The smart bin identifies the type of waste, calculates its weight, and sends this information to Tadweer’s central system, which monitors the fill levels and schedules waste collection accordingly.
Benefits of Smart Bins
Optimised Waste Collection: The primary advantage of these smart bins is their ability to optimise waste collection operations. By knowing exactly when a bin is full, waste collectors can reduce the frequency of their rounds, thus cutting down on fuel consumption and carbon emissions. According to Ollie Lawson, media and communications adviser at Tadweer Group,
“The sensors can tell us how full it is getting. So, waste collectors need to visit the place only when it’s full, and not regularly. This reduces the number of times our trucks have to go out and cuts carbon emissions as well”.
Data-Driven Waste Management: These bins also provide valuable data on waste generation patterns. This data can help Tadweer understand the waste management needs of different communities, such as those living in villas versus apartment buildings. “We are looking at which and how the community is creating waste like a localised knowledge about the types of waste coming out of villas versus tower blocks versus other areas. We don’t have such data and are trying to improve our knowledge and intelligence, which will help manage the waste,”.

Understanding Community Needs
The trial aims to gather detailed insights into the waste disposal habits of various communities. Larger families living in villas might produce different types of waste compared to smaller families in apartments. This information will be crucial in planning and improving waste management processes. “Villas with larger families tend to create a different type of waste than apartments with smaller families. Even different areas tend to produce different amounts of waste, and then recycling rates can be different,” explained Lawson.
Long-Term Solutions
In the long term, the data collected from these smart bins will help Tadweer plan more efficient waste management routes and determine the need for additional resources, such as reverse vending machines (RVMs) or extra recycling bins. “It will provide us with data on what’s being disposed of and the frequency. It will help plan things like the routes of our trucks. We can also see whether the area needs reverse vending machines (RVMs) or extra recycling bins,” said Lawson.
Conclusion
The introduction of smart bins in Abu Dhabi represents a significant advancement in waste management technology. By leveraging data and optimising waste collection, Tadweer Group aims to create a more efficient and environmentally friendly waste management system. This trial could pave the way for broader implementation across the UAE, contributing to better resource management and sustainability efforts.

Dubai Reintroduces 30% Alcohol Sales Tax for 2025
Dubai’s dynamic approach to taxation is shifting again as authorities have confirmed Dubai reintroduces 30% alcohol sales tax for 2025. This comes after a two-year suspension that allowed businesses and consumers some respite in pricing across the emirate.
The Background: A Two-Year Suspension
The 30% alcohol sales tax was initially scrapped at the start of 2023, marking the beginning of a trial period intended to last one year. The move aimed to boost tourism and make Dubai’s nightlife and hospitality sectors more competitive globally. While no official announcement extended the suspension into 2024, the policy quietly remained in place for another year, benefitting both businesses and consumers.
During this time, restaurants, bars, and hotels purchasing alcohol from distributors MMI and African+Eastern enjoyed significant cost reductions, which trickled down to consumers, particularly in retail purchases. However, the pricing structures in bars and restaurants varied due to the inclusion of other operational costs such as rent, labour, and logistics.
What the Tax Return Means
From 2025, the alcohol sales tax will once again be levied on all alcoholic beverages sold to businesses. Dubai Municipality has instructed suppliers and establishments to prepare their systems for compliance with the reinstated tax.
A statement shared by African+Eastern, one of the key alcohol distributors in the UAE, read:
“Please note, Dubai Government have informed us the 30% Municipality tax on alcoholic beverage purchases will be reinstated effective January 2025. This will be effective on all orders invoiced from Wednesday January 1 2025. Dubai Municipality requests all necessary systems are in place to ensure full compliance with this fee.”
The Implications for Businesses
For restaurants, bars, and hotels, the reinstatement of this tax means higher purchasing costs for alcoholic beverages. While the hospitality sector may not pass the full 30% increase onto consumers, it is likely to reflect in revised pricing menus across establishments. Businesses will also need to carefully adjust operational budgets to account for the additional expenses.
Impact on Consumers
Retail consumers may notice a sharper rise in alcohol prices at distributors like MMI and African+Eastern, as the 30% tax is directly applied. However, within restaurants and bars, the price adjustments may not translate to a direct 30% increase, as establishments will consider broader operational factors when setting final prices.
Why Now?
The decision to reinstate the tax likely aligns with Dubai’s broader fiscal strategies, including revenue diversification and sustainability goals for the emirate. After the pandemic, the suspension of the alcohol tax was a strategic move to attract tourists and bolster the hospitality industry. Now, with Dubai’s tourism sector experiencing strong recovery and growth, authorities may feel the market is resilient enough to absorb the tax reintroduction without significant impact on its competitiveness.
Preparing for the Shift
With the clock ticking toward January 2025, businesses and consumers are gearing up for the transition. Hospitality venues will need to reevaluate their pricing strategies to balance competitiveness with profitability, while consumers might want to enjoy the lower prices through 2024 before the tax takes effect.

Nike Wu-Tang Dunks About to Drop
The legendary Wu-Tang Clan is making waves in the sneaker world once again as Nike prepares to re-release the highly coveted Nike Wu-Tang Dunks Highs this September 2024. This release marks a significant moment in sneaker culture, as the Wu-Tang Dunk Highs are often regarded as one of the most mythical and sought-after collaborations in Nike‘s history.
The History of the Wu-Tang Dunk Highs
The Wu-Tang Dunk Highs originally debuted in 1999 as a super-limited release, with only a few dozen pairs available exclusively at New York City’s Training Camp. These sneakers, emblazoned with the iconic Wu-Tang “W” logo, quickly became a grail item for sneakerheads and fans of the Wu-Tang Clan alike. Due to their rarity and cultural significance, the Wu-Tang Dunks skyrocketed in value on the grey market, maintaining their status as a prized possession even as the Dunk market experienced fluctuations over the years.
In June 2024, Nike reignited the excitement by teasing the return of the Wu-Tang Dunks through an Instagram post, sending the sneaker community into a frenzy. This move by Nike sparked a debate among fans: some applauded the decision to make these legendary sneakers more accessible, while others criticized the brand for relying on retro releases to boost interest in the Dunk line.
The Impact of the Wu-Tang Dunk Release
The upcoming release of the Wu-Tang Dunks is seen as a pivotal moment for Nike, signaling what many are calling the brand’s “grail era.” These sneakers, once considered untouchable, will soon be available to a broader audience, potentially shifting the dynamics of sneaker culture. The decision to re-release such an iconic and rare shoe highlights Nike’s strategy of reviving nostalgia and catering to both long-time collectors and new enthusiasts.

However, the Wu-Tang Dunks are just the beginning. In 2025, Jordan Brand is set to release the Undefeated Jordan 4, another monumental collaboration that played a crucial role in shaping modern sneaker culture. This move suggests that Nike is doubling down on its strategy of bringing back some of the most iconic and influential collaborations in sneaker history.
Release Details
The Wu-Tang Nike Dunks will be released in September 2024, with a retail price of $150. Notably, Japanese retailer atmos has announced that they will be releasing these sneakers on August 31st, potentially giving the APAC region an early drop. As the release date approaches, anticipation is building, and these sneakers are expected to sell out quickly.
Whether you’re a die-hard Wu-Tang Clan fan, a seasoned sneaker collector, or someone looking to own a piece of sneaker history, the Wu-Tang Dunk Highs represent a unique opportunity to snag one of the most storied collaborations in the Nike catalog.
