In a city obsessed with visual spectacle, Honeycomb HiFi flips the script and asks: What if we listened more? Hidden behind an unmarked door in the Pullman Dubai Downtown, Honeycomb HiFi is a transportive space where sound, taste, and art collide. This is not your average Japanese restaurant. Nor is it just a vinyl listening bar. It’s a mood — curated, intentional, immersive — and rapidly becoming one of the most important cultural touchpoints in Dubai’s underground nightlife renaissance.

The first time I stepped into Honeycomb Hi-Fi I wasn’t sure what to expect — the name sounded cool but vague — and then the sound hit me before I even sat down. It’s one of those rare places where the music isn’t background noise; it’s the whole point. I remember standing near the bar watching the DJ tweak the decks while the bass rolled through the room like a wave you could actually feel in your ribs. The lighting was low, the crowd was a nice mix of audiophiles and people who just wanted to dance without the usual club chaos, and the drinks came quick without anyone hovering. I ended up staying way longer than planned, just leaning against the wall letting the set wash over me. It’s not flashy or overproduced — no giant screens or bottle service drama — just clean sound, good curation, and a space that lets the music breathe. If you’re into proper hi-fi vibes without the pretence, this is it. Go on a night when your favourite genre is playing, arrive early to grab a spot, and turn your phone off. You’ll leave with your ears happy and probably a new track stuck in your head for days.

A Listening Bar Rooted in Tokyo, Reimagined in Dubai

The idea of a listening bar isn’t new — it originated in 1950s post-war Tokyo, where vinyl lovers and jazzheads sought out quiet corners to escape the chaos and appreciate music through high-fidelity sound systems. Honeycomb HiFi revives this rare concept and injects it with Izakaya-style dining, rotating art exhibitions, and audiophile-grade acoustics courtesy of Devon Turnbull’s legendary Ojas speakers.

Honeycomb HiFi pays tribute to its Tokyo roots, but adds a distinctly Dubai twist. You’ll find yourself surrounded by stacks of vinyl, intimate booths, and moody amber lighting. The vibe is deep crate-digger meets Japanese gastropub, designed for patrons who don’t just want to eat or drink — they want to feel.

Where the Food Matches the Frequency

The food, led by executive chef Matt Abergel — the force behind the globally acclaimed Yardbird in Hong Kong — is no afterthought. Abergel’s culinary credibility includes Michelin recognition and cult status among food lovers in Asia. At Honeycomb HiFi, he brings the same ethos: elevated comfort food that invites repeat enjoyment.

Signature dishes like Butternut Squash Tempura, Dandan Noodles, Akami Tuna Sashimi, and Kimchi Fried Rice channel the soul of Izakaya dining. His Wagyu Katsu Sliders are nothing short of legendary. Abergel calls it “relaxed food with no real pretence,” served in a setting where the music and flavours feed off one another.

This is food designed to support the vinyl experience — not steal the show, but enrich it. And that’s where Honeycomb’s menu shines: it understands its role in the bigger symphony of sound, light, and sensation.

The Sound of Honeycomb: Vinyl Only, Always

If you catch guests aiming their phones at the ceiling, they’re not taking selfies — they’re Shazaming the track. But they probably won’t find it. That’s because Honeycomb HiFi is exclusively vinyl. The music, played on Turnbull’s custom-built Ojas sound system, is curated by in-house selectors and global guest DJs.

This system is more than equipment. It’s a statement. Built from Spiral Oak and tuned by Turnbull himself — whose speakers have been used by the likes of Mark Ronson and the late Virgil Abloh — it delivers sound so rich and warm it feels alive. It took nearly a year to craft and ship from the US to Dubai.

You might hear Sade’s Love Deluxe one night, a French downtempo set the next, and a deep Afrobeat journey after that. Each evening feels like a sonic exhibition, not a playlist.

Co-owner Varun Khemaney says it best: “When people can’t find the music online, it means we’re doing our job. That experience becomes a memory.”

More Than a Venue — A Cultural Movement

It’s this philosophy that makes Honeycomb HiFi different. There are no velvet ropes. No bottle sparklers. No need to scream over chart-topping EDM. Instead, there’s a sense of ritual and community — the kind that’s been lost in many of Dubai’s mainstream nightlife venues.

It’s a sanctuary for sound and soul. A place where vinyl, visuals, and comfort food co-exist with elegance. There’s also a vinyl shop and library for those who want to dig deeper, as well as rotating art exhibitions that amplify the venue’s creative ethos. Artists featured range from local UAE talents to regional pioneers in street and digital art.

Globally, Honeycomb HiFi holds its own among the best listening bars in Tokyo, London’s Spiritland, and Berlin’s Rhinoçéros. But its Dubai setting — and its synthesis of East Asian tradition with Middle Eastern energy — gives it a singular identity.

When to Go, What to Expect

Weekdays (and Sundays) are perfect for true listening sessions. Think deep cuts, jazz nights, and experimental sets. Come Fridays and Saturdays, the tempo rises. The space subtly shifts into an intimate club experience, with volume turned up and the dancefloor quietly taking form between bites and beats.

The venue operates from 7:30 PM to 2:00 AM Sunday through Thursday and stays open till 3:00 AM on weekends. Reservations are encouraged, especially for weekend slots.

Why Honeycomb HiFi Is Unlike Anywhere Else in Dubai

Honeycomb HiFi is what happens when craft meets culture, when music is more than background noise, and when chefs and DJs share the same stage. It’s an anomaly — in all the right ways.

In a city overflowing with trends, Honeycomb is timeless. It doesn’t just serve food or spin records. It builds experiences, nurtures community, and brings back what so many venues have forgotten: the joy of truly listening.

    Answers On A Postcard

What is Honeycomb HiFi and how is it different from other venues in Dubai?

Honeycomb HiFi is Dubai’s first true listening bar, inspired by Tokyo’s audiophile lounges. It combines high-end vinyl playback through custom Ojas speakers with elevated Japanese Izakaya dining, curated art, and an unmatched atmosphere of community and creativity.

Who is behind the concept and sound system of Honeycomb HiFi?

Co-founded by Varun Khemaney, Honeycomb HiFi features a bespoke sound system designed by Devon Turnbull of Ojas Audio — a name revered by industry legends like Virgil Abloh and Mark Ronson. The system took nearly a year to build using Spiral Oak wood sourced specifically for the venue.

What kind of food does Honeycomb HiFi serve?

Chef Matt Abergel leads the kitchen with a menu of reimagined Japanese Izakaya dishes. Expect soul-warming fare like Butternut Squash Tempura, Wagyu Katsu Sliders, Kimchi Fried Rice, and Akami Tuna Sashimi — food designed to harmonise with the music, not distract from it.

When is the best time to visit Honeycomb HiFi?

Weekdays and Sundays are ideal for quieter, immersive listening sessions, while Fridays and Saturdays offer a more vibrant, club-like energy. With ever-changing vinyl DJ sets and deep-cut programming, every visit offers a new sonic and culinary experience.
