How to Sell a Car in Dubai: 8 Steps Before the Handover

Build a realistic asking range, document the car’s condition, distinguish inspection types and resolve the bank’s electronic mortgage release before completing the RTA transfer.

Key Takeaways

  • To successfully sell a car in Dubai, establish a realistic asking price and understand any outstanding finance.
  • Build a price sheet based on comparable ads, not wishes; differentiate between asking prices and sale prices.
  • Make your listing transparent by answering common buyer questions and providing detailed car history and condition.
  • Use current RTA services for ownership transfer, avoiding generic arrangements that may not cover all requirements.
  • Document the payment and handover sequence to prevent misunderstandings, ensuring a smooth transaction.

I would get three things straight before listing a car in Dubai: its realistic asking range, any outstanding finance, and the route to a completed transfer. A flattering advert cannot rescue a sale that stalls at the bank. Equally, a quick offer is not automatically a good offer once deductions and conditions appear.

These eight steps are a preparation plan, not a promise to sell within a fixed number of days or achieve a particular price. They keep the useful work in one place: evidence for the asking figure, an honest listing, inspection choices, payment safeguards and the official handover.

1. Work backwards from your actual car sale deadline

If you are leaving the UAE or replacing the car, start with the date you genuinely need the transaction finished. Allow for the bank, a buyer’s inspection, any repairs you decide to make and the transfer appointment. Do not treat the day you receive an offer as the day every dependency disappears.

I would not delay a necessary sale because a guide calls January or April the “best month”. Without a dated, relevant dataset, a seasonal story cannot tell you how quickly your particular model will sell. Your vehicle’s condition, asking price and readiness matter more to the plan you can control.

Your situationWhat I would establish firstWhat not to assume
A fixed departure dateThe last practical day for finance release and transferAn enquiry today means a completed sale tomorrow
A replacement car is arrivingWhether you can manage a gap between vehiclesThe old car will sell at your preferred figure on delivery day
No urgent deadlineA review date for price and listing qualityLeaving an unrealistic advert unchanged is a strategy

2. Build a comparable-price sheet, not a wish list

Start with several genuinely comparable adverts: the same generation, model year, trim, specification, mileage range and meaningful condition differences. Record the date, asking figure and what makes each example comparable. A dealer’s warrantied car and a private car needing repairs are not equal simply because their model badges match.

Asking prices are not completed-sale prices. I would use the set to establish a working range, then explain where my car belongs within it. I would not claim that a particular price band contains a fixed percentage of UAE buyers without a source, sample and date.

Here is a deliberately hypothetical example, not a valuation. Three comparable asking prices are AED52,000, AED55,000 and AED58,000. The median is AED55,000. That does not prove your car is worth AED55,000: a documented warranty, different mileage or needed repair can make the comparison weaker. The calculation organises your research; it does not replace it.

ComparableAsking figureDifference to investigate
Example AAED52,000Is the lower price explained by condition or specification?
Example BAED55,000Does it actually match the trim and mileage?
Example CAED58,000Does a warranty or dealer service justify the higher ask?

Set a private minimum you can accept and review it against real enquiries. A negotiation allowance should follow your situation, not an automatic AED2,000–5,000 formula. Do not advertise a price you cannot explain and hope a buyer overlooks the alternatives.

3. Make the sell listing answer the buyer’s obvious questions

“Well maintained” tells me little. A service invoice, exact trim and a clear account of known faults tell me much more. Keep claims narrow enough to substantiate: “dealer serviced to this recorded mileage” is different from “full history” when several years are missing.

  • Identity: make, model, year, trim, regional specification and current mileage.
  • History: the records you hold, ownership information you can establish, and known accident or repair history.
  • Condition: faults, warning lights, cosmetic damage and work due—not just the upgrades you want to mention.
  • Recent work: what was done, when, and the supporting invoice where available.
  • Warranty: provider, expiry and whether transfer is actually allowed.
  • Finance: whether there is a bank mortgage and what release arrangements remain.
  • Viewing: a realistic area and time window, without publishing unnecessary personal details.

I would leave stereotypes such as “lady driven” out. Describe the car, not an imagined personality of its previous driver. Nor would I call it accident-free because I have not personally seen an accident report. Separate what you know from what a buyer still needs to inspect.

A useful listing skeleton is: “[Year/model/trim], [mileage], [specification], service records covering [period], known work required [details], warranty [verified terms], finance [status]. Viewings in [area]; inspection arrangements by agreement.” Fill it with real facts, not the example values.

4. Photograph the condition you are actually selling a car

A clean car and straightforward daylight make the photographs easier to read. I would show the defects as carefully as the flattering angles. Discovering an undisclosed scrape at the viewing wastes everyone’s time and damages confidence in the rest of the advert.

  • Front and rear three-quarter views, plus both sides.
  • Front and rear seats, dashboard, controls and luggage area.
  • Odometer and any warning indicators, without concealing a fault.
  • Tyres, wheels and close-ups of visible damage.
  • Relevant service evidence with names, addresses, ID numbers and other unnecessary personal information redacted.

Do not edit out damage or use old photographs that no longer represent the vehicle. If an item in a photo is not included, state that. A careful photo set is a disclosure aid, not proof that the engine, accident history or electronics have passed an independent check.

5. Separate a compliance test from a car purchase inspection

TASJEEL’s FAQ describes its comprehensive test as a detailed inspection and road test for a pre-owned vehicle. That is a different question from whether the required technical test for registration or transfer is valid. Ask the provider what the chosen service covers and what it excludes.

I would agree the inspection provider, cost, access and next step before anyone books. A buyer may want a model specialist; a seller may already have a report. Neither should assume that a report guarantees the car has no hidden defect or removes the need to read its findings.

There is no sensible universal “only inspect above AED50,000” rule here. The car’s condition, complexity and the parties’ needs matter. Obtain the actual inspection quote; do not budget around an unsourced AED200–400 range or promise it will recover several thousand dirhams at negotiation.

6. Resolve car finance through your bank, not a handshake

If the car is financed, ask your lender for the settlement amount, its validity, applicable fees and the procedure for removing the registered mortgage. Do this before promising a handover date. A loan balance on a screen is not necessarily the final settlement figure.

Emirates NBD’s release guidance provides a concrete example: after full settlement, it asks customers to allow one working day before requesting release, with the request processed within three working days. For a Dubai-registered vehicle, the confirmation comes from RTA. The release request itself is free; that does not mean early settlement has no separate charge.

Those are this bank’s published arrangements, not a universal deadline for every lender. The important distinction is between paying the loan and the electronic mortgage release being recorded. Holding a registration card does not by itself demonstrate that the bank’s interest has been removed.

Where the buyer is also financing the purchase or money is intended to settle your existing loan, have the banks explain the approved sequence and documentation. Do not present a buyer paying your bank directly as an automatic, risk-free arrangement. Never hand over account passwords, one-time codes or unrestricted identity documents to someone offering to “sort it all out”.

7. Agree the payment and handover sequence in writing

Record the vehicle, agreed price, any deposit conditions, the inspection agreement, responsibility for charges and what happens if the transaction cannot complete. A verbal “we’ll work it out at the centre” leaves the most important decisions until the worst moment.

Verify payment through your own bank or the bank-agreed financing process, not a screenshot, forwarded email or a buyer’s phone. If the proposed arrangement is unfamiliar, ask your bank to explain when funds are actually available and what evidence to retain before you sign or release the vehicle.

For comparing a direct offer with a managed-sale proposal, use the net amount and conditions. In a hypothetical example, an AED55,000 offer with an agreed AED1,000 deduction leaves AED54,000, not AED55,000. A larger headline figure is not automatically the better offer if new deductions, payment conditions or an uncertain completion date follow.

I would be equally clear about keys, spare keys, service documents, included accessories and the exact handover point. Remove personal accounts and saved data at the appropriate stage. Keep a record of the completed transaction rather than assuming a friendly message closes every obligation.

8. Use the current RTA ownership service—not a generic typing-office promise

RTA’s changing-ownership service provides digital channels as well as service centres. Its online route includes identity verification, both parties’ agreement signatures and subsequent buyer registration. It is not simply “both turn up anywhere and hand over the Mulkiya”.

Check the transaction’s requirements for insurance, technical inspection, fines and any mortgage release. Agree whether the plates are being retained or included. A plate-number transaction is not automatically the same service as transferring and registering the car.

The service lists a 14-day validity for the sale agreement. Do not mistake a digital service time labelled “instantly” for a guaranteed end-to-end sale, bank release and registration time. Establish the complete fees and required centre steps for your case; an agreement fee alone is not the full sale cost.

TASJEEL’s FAQ also distinguishes attendance where an electronic sale agreement exists: it says only the buyer need attend in that case, otherwise both parties should attend. Confirm your actual route before arranging time off work or relying on an ordinary typing office to complete the transaction.

My verdict

I would rather have a defensible price, clear records and a transfer-ready car than an advert shouting “urgent” with no plan behind it. Keep the listing specific, show the flaws, establish the bank’s process early and compare the net offers. That is useful preparation. A promised sale date, invented buyer percentage or guaranteed saving is not.

Frequently asked questions

Can I advertise a car that is still financed?

You can discuss a sale, but make the finance position clear and obtain the lender’s approved settlement and release process before committing to transfer or handover. Buyer finance can add further steps; do not assume an informal arrangement substitutes for bank approval.

Does a technical test prove a used car has no defects?

No. Read the scope and findings of the actual test. A comprehensive pre-purchase assessment and a technical test required for registration are different services, and neither should be turned into an unlimited guarantee.

Must the seller and buyer always attend together?

Not necessarily. RTA provides digital agreement routes, and TASJEEL distinguishes cases with an electronic sale agreement. Use the current official requirements for the chosen service, including any centre visit still needed.

How much is my car worth?

This guide does not value your vehicle. Compare suitably matched adverts, remember that they show asking rather than completed-sale prices, and account for condition, specification, records and any real offer conditions.
