Choose a Dubai nol card, check its balance and avoid pending top-up problems. Compare fares, pass eligibility, registration and personal-card renewal.
Need to check a nol balance or get through the gate? Start with RTA’s official website or the nol Pay app. A payment receipt is not always usable travel credit: some top-ups need a second tap or activation. This guide separates buying a card, loading it, registering it and renewing it—four different jobs that are easily confused.

Which nol card should you buy?
RTA’s card comparison lists Silver and Gold at AED 25, including AED 19 credit; the Personal blue card is AED 70 with AED 20 credit. Red Ticket issuance costs AED 2, with the journey purchased separately—not AED 2 of included travel. The nol Travel card is another option, listed at AED 100 including AED 19 credit, with a separate offers programme.

For several days of ordinary travel, compare Silver against the Red Ticket’s actual trip costs. Do not choose by the cheapest piece of plastic or paper alone.
Fares, transfers and a useful break-even calculation
The RTA fare table shows Silver journeys at AED 3 within one zone, AED 5 across two adjacent zones and AED 7.50 across more than two zones. Regular Red Ticket equivalents are AED 4, AED 6 and AED 8.50. Gold Metro/Tram fares are AED 6, AED 10 and AED 15. These are zone fares, not a quote for every marine or intercity service.
A Silver card’s non-credit cost is AED 25 − AED 19 = AED 6, versus AED 2 to issue a Red Ticket. At AED 1 saved on each comparable regular zone journey, four trips recover that AED 4 difference. This is our arithmetic comparison, not a discount offer; daily passes and different journey patterns can change the choice.
For integrated Metro/bus travel, RTA allows 30 minutes between modes, subject to its journey and transfer limits. Tap out as well as in: the route and zones, not just the first boarding, determine the fare.
Monthly passes are not restricted to blue cards
RTA’s Travel Pass service allows Personal and Registered cards to load 7-, 30-, 90- and 365-day products. Anonymous cards are limited to seven-day passes. A registered Silver card can therefore be sufficient for an ordinary monthly commuter; buying blue is not the only route.
Check both outbound and return zones in S’hail before choosing. These passes cover Metro, Tram and eligible Dubai buses, not every trip you can pay for with nol; intercity and seasonal buses are excluded. Travel outside your selected zones attracts the normal fare. Ask about a particular route before treating a pass as unlimited UAE-wide transport.
Top-up amount and activation: keep them separate
The current top-up service lists minimums of AED 5 for nol Pay/S’hail/web, AED 20 at Metro vending machines, AED 50 at Metro ticket offices, AED 30 in RTA Dubai and AED 20 in DubaiNow. Its online transaction cap is AED 150. These are channel minimums, not fares.
For a physical card in nol Pay, tap the card to the phone’s NFC area, pay, then tap again to load the credit. Website or manually entered tag-ID top-ups can take 45 minutes to four hours and require activation. A bus validator cannot activate those pending top-ups; complete activation before boarding.
RTA states a general AED 7.50 minimum for public transport, while its gate-activation FAQ gives AED 3.50 for blue cards. Do not apply the headline figure indiscriminately to every card and service. If a paid top-up is missing, check activation status rather than repeatedly paying.
Why the machine will not accept a small recharge
RTA’s Metro machine notice dates the AED 20 minimum to 1 March 2025. It identifies nol Pay, selected solar machines, Zoom stores and Tram vending machines as alternatives for amounts below AED 20. A machine refusing AED 10 is not proof that every channel has raised its minimum.
How to check the balance safely
Use nol Pay or the nol Card Balance option on RTA’s homepage. Enter the tag ID exactly as printed rather than relying on an assumed digit count. We have not verified an SMS balance-check command; do not send card or personal details to a number simply because a third-party guide recommends it.
Before leaving for a bus stop, check three things: the card is valid, the displayed balance is usable rather than pending, and your chosen top-up has completed. Keep the transaction reference if you need RTA to trace a payment. Do not post your card number, PIN, Emirates ID or payment receipt publicly.
Registering Silver or Gold: what the fee buys
RTA’s registration service lists AED 30 to register an existing anonymous Silver or Gold card. Sign in, select registration, enter or scan the tag ID, check your details and pay. Follow the confirmation’s activation steps; web registration may require a later tap.
Registration provides a secure balance and longer-duration pass access, not a concession fare by itself. Register before the card is lost: an already lost, stolen, damaged or faulty anonymous card cannot be registered retrospectively. Keep the resulting PIN private for relevant refund services.
Concessions need their own eligibility checks
The Personal card service lists eligible UAE students aged 5–23 and senior Emiratis and residents aged 60+ for 50% fares. Qualifying People of Determination receive the applicable free-travel concession with the required Sanad documentation. Ordinary Personal cards do not automatically get half-price travel.
Student evidence must establish current enrolment. The concession and the five-year card are not the same expiry: eligibility may need annual renewal. Check the applicable category and route exclusions before budgeting a discount.
An expired card is not always a vanished balance
The Manage nol Card page describes Silver and Gold as valid for five years plus two years after expiry without top-up eligibility. That is not a new top-up window or automatic renewal. RTA’s top-up terms also warn against using an invalid card, so confirm the actual status with RTA or station staff before travelling rather than assume every old card will work.
Spending and refund deadlines are different. RTA’s refund table gives one year from expiry in its lost, damaged or expired-card row. Do not assume the two-year card allowance extends that window; ask which expiry date and conditions apply to your record. Its top-up service also says a pending payment cannot be loaded onto an expired card. If money is missing, use our loaded-versus-pending balance diagnosis before paying again. No refund or gate entry was tested for this guide.
The Personal-card renewal service is specifically for Personal cards, not a universal anonymous-Silver renewal tariff. It lists AED 70 standard, AED 80 Gold design, AED 100 special design and AED 110 special Gold design; these totals include AED 20 credit. ISIC has a separate AED 95 option. Delivery timing depends on approval and verification; follow the issued tracking rather than assuming same-day replacement.
Lost or stolen: report it promptly
RTA’s replacement guidance says to report a lost or stolen Personal card immediately and apply for a refund/block. Blocking can take up to 48 hours, during which the holder remains responsible for use. Replacement balance transfer is described as four working days after approval—not instant automatic credit at any kiosk.
For a registered Silver or Gold card, use the account’s refund service or ask RTA which replacement process applies. An anonymous card has no retrospective registration route after loss. Use RTA’s contact number, 800 9090, if the account or card status is unclear. Keep the report reference; do not continue using a card reported lost.
Where nol works—and where the product matters
nol is used on Dubai Metro, Tram, buses and supported marine services, plus parking and selected non-transport partners. Card acceptance, a Travel Pass entitlement and the fare charged are different questions. Before a ferry, water-taxi or unusual route, check that service’s booking/payment rules rather than assuming it works like a Metro gate. Each traveller should have their own applicable card or ticket.
