The mid-year rotation: defining the MENA sound in 2026

Six months into 2026, the regional soundscape has shifted towards nostalgic tarab influences and high-energy Maghrebi rap. If you’re searching for standout new MENA music, this is the moment: from desert blues to Y2K-inspired R&B, these releases are defining the summer vibe in clubs and playlists from Cairo to Casablanca.

I have spent fifteen years in Dubai booths. I know which tracks work in a rotation. The crowd is moving away from generic beats toward something with a pulse—local feeling but sounding global. Right now, that means a mix of raw street energy and stripped-back nostalgia.

    Pop legends and soulful shifts

The first half of 2026 has been headlined by major comebacks and stylistic evolutions. Sherine’s return with ‘Teba’an Teba’an’ and Saint Levant’s ‘Sabah El Ward’ represent a move towards stripped-back sounds that honour the region’s musical heritage.

Sherine is back. Her latest track ‘Teba’an Teba’an’ is an all-consuming love story with 54 million YouTube views. She performs in the North Coast of Egypt on 7 August.

Saint Levant is taking a different path. In ‘Sabah El Ward’, he moves away from heavy production to focus on the essentials of the golden age of tarab. This shift reflects the evolution of Arabic pop as artists look backwards to move forward.

From Cairo jazz to Casablanca rap

Artists are blending traditional elements with modern genres. Tul8te has mastered the live session format with a jazz-infused EP, while ElGrandeToto and Ino Casablanca dominate the rap scene with high-intensity projects.

Tul8te’s ‘Narein Live Sessions (Jazz edition)’ is a 25-minute EP recorded in a Downtown Cairo hotel lobby turned into a jazz club. He has shifted his sound, letting the voice and soulful instruments do the heavy lifting.

In Casablanca, the energy is different. ElGrandeToto’s ‘Salgoat (Vol. 2)’ brings Moroccan urban intensity through personal experience. Then there is Ino Casablanca. The Spanish-Moroccan rapper is on a streak; his collaboration with BB NOYAA, ‘Situation Cheap’, is a Y2K R&B track about a messy relationship.

    Desert blues and summer rhythms

For an eclectic summer, look to the hypnotic guitar lines of Tinariwen’s ‘Hoggar’ and the Maghrebi-Afro-Caribbean pop energy of 7ARI’s ‘Agogo’. These tracks provide rhythmic depth beyond standard pop.

Tinariwen’s ‘Hoggar’ blends traditional Tuareg sounds with signature hypnotic guitars to explore identity and exile. It is a legacy sound that transcends the Sahara.

7ARI’s ‘Agogo’ is the choice for a beach club. This Maghrebi-Afro-Caribbean pop record deals with greed and betrayal in a toxic relationship while maintaining a laid-back energy. Nour also deserves a spot; the track ‘Alo!?’ captures the friction of a generation caught between connection and distance.

    Live music and visual storytelling

Visual and live elements are vital. DJ Snake released the music video for ‘Cairo Express’ in June. Produced by 2Horloges and directed by Omani filmmaker Chndy, the video uses surrealism to match the deep bassline and melodic motifs inspired by Cairo’s street culture.

For those who prefer the real thing, the 7 August show in Egypt is the event. Seeing Sherine live after her absence will be the defining moment of the summer season.
