The cinematic legacy of Breitling and Aston Martin

The partnership is rooted in 1965, when a Breitling Top Time Ref. 2002 was famously worn by Sean Connery in the James Bond film Thunderball, appearing alongside the iconic Aston Martin DB5 to cement a legacy of spy-era sophistication and British engineering. The collaboration between Breitling and Aston Martin, particularly in models like the Breitling Aston Martin limited editions, highlights a shared history of luxury and performance. The Aston Martin DB5 debuted in 1963. It became a global symbol of design and cinematic cool almost immediately. When it paired with the Top Time Ref. 2002 on screen, it created a specific association between high-speed motoring and precision timing. This isn’t a new friendship. It’s a revival of a pairing that happened nearly six decades ago. Breitling is leaning into that 1960s aesthetic for this release.

Design details: How the DB5 translates to a timepiece

Rather than a literal car replica, the Top Time B01 Chronograph 41 uses subtle design cues: a wooden inner ring mimicking the DB5 steering wheel, ‘squircle’ sub-dials inspired by vintage dashboard gauges, and leather straps that evoke classic automotive interiors.

The “squircle” sub-dials are the standout here. They avoid the standard circle in favour of a shape that mirrors the gauges you’d see in a vintage DB5 cockpit. It’s a precise detail that separates this from a standard chronograph.

The wooden inner ring adds a tactile element. It references the steering wheel of the grand tourer. Georges Kern, CEO of House of Brands, noted that the DB5 design remains relevant today. The watch reflects that by keeping the lines clean.

The leather straps provide the warmth of a car interior. They avoid the sterile feel of modern metal bracelets, opting instead for a look that feels like a 1960s luxury cabin.

    The three limited-edition models explained

The collection features three tiers: a stainless steel model with a silver dial (limited to 1,022 pieces), a steel and platinum version with a black lacquered dial (limited to 315 pieces), and an 18k red gold edition with a natural onyx dial (limited to 250 pieces).

The stainless steel version is the most accessible of the three. With a silver dial, it stays closest to the spirit of the original Ref. 2002 from the 60s. There are 1,022 of these available.

The steel and platinum model is sharper. It uses a black lacquered dial and a platinum bezel for higher contrast. Production is tighter here, with only 315 pieces.

The top tier is the 18k red gold edition. It features a natural onyx dial, which is a first for Breitling. Only 250 individually numbered pieces exist. This is the one that will vanish from shelves first.

Collector’s view: Why this matters in the UAE

For UAE enthusiasts, this drop combines two high-status brands with significant local presence. As someone who owns a Breitling, I recognise the brand’s ability to blend heritage with modern movement, making these highly sought-after limited editions particularly relevant for the region’s luxury market.

Aston Martin has a massive following in the UAE. You see them on the roads of Dubai and Abu Dhabi constantly. When you pair that car culture with a limited-edition watch, you hit a specific nerve for local collectors.

I’ve been hearing about this arrival in the region for a while. The appeal here isn’t just the brand name. It’s the rarity. In a market where everyone has the same standard luxury models, a 250-piece gold watch with an onyx dial is a genuine statement.

Where to find the collection in the UAE

Collectors should monitor official Breitling boutiques in the Dubai Mall and Abu Dhabi Mall, or high-end retailers like Ahmed Seddiqi & Sons. Given the extremely low production numbers—especially the 250-piece gold edition—early enquiries are essential to secure a piece.

Don’t wait for a public announcement. With only 315 platinum and 250 gold pieces globally, the UAE allocation will be small. Your best bet is to contact your client advisor at Ahmed Seddiqi & Sons immediately.

Visit the boutiques in Dubai Mall or Abu Dhabi Mall to see the proportions in person. The B01 Chronograph 41 is a balanced size, but the weight of the gold and onyx model is something you need to feel on the wrist.

The Breitling Top Time DB5 tribute is more than a mere collaboration; it is a calculated nod to a shared history of style and speed.

Check your local Breitling boutique or authorised dealer for availability and pre-order details.
